In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gmail.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=dbb36c9c1ba979ba7eb5805e4&amp;id=b15367b249&amp;e=06a7d85e83\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a>\u00a0the Herring Pond Tribe calls on Governor Charlie Baker and Governor Janet Mills in Maine to reject imports of Canadian hydroelectricity because they cause environmental injustices in \u201cIndigenous communities whose homelands and sacred places are ravaged by dams, flooding, [and] transmission corridors\u2026.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Massachusetts energy policy does not consider the negative impacts of Canada\u2019s hydroelectricity on Indigenous and frontline communities.\u00a0 In 2018, the Baker Administration approved\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gmail.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=dbb36c9c1ba979ba7eb5805e4&amp;id=7e9b00b9dd&amp;e=06a7d85e83\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20-year contracts<\/a>\u00a0to import more hydroelectricity from the Canadian power company Hydro-Quebec, calling it clean energy. Most of Hydro-Quebec\u2019s dams were built on the ancestral lands of Indigenous people without prior consent and new megadams are under construction for export to Massachusetts.\u00a0 The New England Clean Energy Connect (NECEC) hydropower corridor will deliver the power to Boston and cut through 145 miles of Maine wilderness A majority of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gmail.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=dbb36c9c1ba979ba7eb5805e4&amp;id=4cfd745fea&amp;e=06a7d85e83\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maine residents oppose<\/a>\u00a0NECEC. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gmail.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=dbb36c9c1ba979ba7eb5805e4&amp;id=e175a9c0f0&amp;e=06a7d85e83\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">similar corridor<\/a>\u00a0to New York City is opposed by a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gmail.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=dbb36c9c1ba979ba7eb5805e4&amp;id=f9809cb006&amp;e=06a7d85e83\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wide range of organizations<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Since 2017, Indigenous people who suffer from Canadian hydropower development\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gmail.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=dbb36c9c1ba979ba7eb5805e4&amp;id=0fa20bf876&amp;e=06a7d85e83\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have spoken<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gmail.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=dbb36c9c1ba979ba7eb5805e4&amp;id=271c142d72&amp;e=06a7d85e83\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Day of Mourning<\/a> in Plymouth, Massachusetts on the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday as a reminder of the impact of colonialism on Native people.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gmail.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=dbb36c9c1ba979ba7eb5805e4&amp;id=5fb875dd14&amp;e=06a7d85e83\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amy Norman an Inuk woman<\/a>\u00a0whose ancestral territory is poisoned spoke in 2019 about how hydropower is not clean energy but destroys lands and waters.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Herring Pond Tribe Chairlady Melissa (Harding) Ferretti stated, \u201cWe are honored to stand with the Penobscot and Innu Nations in opposing projects that are destructive to the environment and to Indigenous homelands.\u00a0 As Indigenous peoples, it is our responsibility to protect all that is sacred \u2013 including land, water, and wildlife \u2013 for the wellbeing of future generations.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>For more information:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gmail.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=dbb36c9c1ba979ba7eb5805e4&amp;id=5b7e1730cd&amp;e=06a7d85e83\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.herringpondtribe.org<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Contact: Melissa Ferretti, Chairlady\/President, Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribe, Inc.
